What will the second half of 2025 bring for accountants?
As we step into the latter half of 2025, the accountancy sector is showing signs of subtle but significant shifts. Whether you're in practice, recruiting for your team, or exploring your next move, now’s the time to take stock and get ahead of what’s coming.
Key Hiring Trends We’re Seeing
The first half of the year saw steady recruitment, but the pace is picking up, especially in audit, corporate finance, and general practice. Here’s what the market’s telling us:
1. Senior Auditors in Demand
Mid-sized and regional firms are particularly keen to attract strong auditors at the senior to assistant manager level. This isn’t just about technical capability, firms want professionals who can own client relationships, manage junior staff, and add real commercial value.
Looking in the South West? We’ve got a fantastic Audit Senior role in Bristol with a progressive, people-focused firm. Get in touch if you'd like the details.
2. Soft Skills Matter More Than Ever
With client expectations evolving, communication, emotional intelligence, and team leadership are becoming as important as qualifications and technical knowledge.
3. Hybrid is Standard, But Flexibility is Evolving
While hybrid working has become the norm, we’re now seeing more nuanced flexibility: compressed hours, remote-first roles, and outcome-based performance structures.
4. Culture Is the New Differentiator
Salary benchmarks have levelled off, so firms are focusing on culture, growth opportunities, and wellbeing to stand out. Candidates are asking: “What’s it like to work there?” before “What does it pay?”
5. Retention Is in the Spotlight
Particularly around newly qualifieds and those stepping into their first management role. Expect more internal progression and investment in CPD to keep top talent.
International Cat Day: The Real Debate
Did you know Friday 8th August is International Cat Day?
At ProTalent, the debate is real, but it’s safe to say we lean dog-heavy. Three of us are proud dog owners (and yes, we have the Zoom cameos to prove it), while only one team member holds it down for the cats...
So tell us, are you a cat or dog person? Head over to our Linkedin newsletter and drop us a comment!
Adventures in London... with Twins
This week, I’m heading to London with my twin six-year-old daughters. We’ve got big plans: sightseeing, trains, snacks, and even a few client meetings squeezed in.
They’ve promised to be professional — but I have a sneaking suspicion they’ll be running the show. If you’re one of the clients we’re seeing... I apologise in advance for the stickers, glitter, and possible snack negotiations.
