How to Set Career Goals That Actually Get Results
It’s officially December - the season of reflections, “what’s next?” conversations, and the pressure (let’s be honest) to figure it all out before the New Year.
But before we jump into bold resolutions and career plans for 2025, let’s take a breath.
Because the truth is, most people don’t struggle with ambition - they struggle with follow-through.
They don’t lack drive - they lack clarity, support and strategy.
At ProTalent, we speak to accountants at every stage of their career, and the one thing we hear over and over is this:
“I know I want more, but I’m not sure how to get there.”
So let’s talk about how to set goals that actually get results - not just gather dust in a notebook.
1. Be Specific, Not Vague
“Progress my career” is a desire, not a goal. Try:
- “Take the lead on at least one client portfolio in Q1”
- “Gain review-level exposure on an audit file by June”
- “Request a promotion conversation in my April 1:1”
The more specific you are, the more action-friendly your goals become.
2. Choose Goals That Matter to You
Not every goal has to be about promotion. Maybe your goal is:
-
Balance: Creating better work boundaries
-
Growth: Finally saying yes to that qualification
-
Change: Moving into tax or advisory from audit
-
Confidence: Asking for what you need
Let your goals reflect your values, not someone else’s expectations.
3. Build Structure Around It
Good intentions fade without action.
Try using one of these simple frameworks:
-
SMART Goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Timely
-
The 1–3–5 Rule: 1 big goal, 3 medium goals, 5 small actions
-
The Accountability Trick: Tell someone. Write it down. Make it real.
And remember, if you fall behind, you’re not failing - you’re learning.
4. What If You Don’t Know Your Goal Yet?
That’s OK too.
Sometimes the first goal is to get clear on what you want. To explore new options. To speak to someone (like us!) about what’s possible.
You don’t need a 10-year plan. You just need a next step.
Featured Role: Tax Consultant – Sussex
If your goal includes a fresh challenge or a new specialism, this week’s featured role could be a perfect match.
It’s an opportunity to work with a progressive firm offering support, autonomy, and a real path to grow in tax.
National Grief Awareness Week – A Gentle Word
This week also marks National Grief Awareness Week - something not always talked about openly in professional spaces, but very present.
Grief doesn’t care about deadlines or emails. It’s not limited to losing someone - it can show up in career transitions, identity shifts, or life changes that leave us feeling unsettled.
If you're carrying something heavy, or supporting someone who is, be kind to yourself. Kindness, empathy and flexibility aren’t just soft skills - they’re survival tools.
Small Business Saturday – Big Impact
As we head into Small Business Saturday on 6 December, we’re celebrating the firms that make up the heartbeat of our profession - the small practices, local powerhouses, and growing teams doing things differently.
We work with so many brilliant small accountancy firms that offer:
- Real development opportunities
- Visible, approachable leadership
- Supportive, people-first cultures
If you're looking for more meaning, more flexibility, or a place where you can truly grow - don’t overlook the small firms. They're often where the biggest opportunities live.
What Career Goal Are You Setting?
We’d love to hear it - even if it’s still in draft form.
Drop us a message, or just reply and share your thoughts. You might be surprised how far one honest conversation can take you.
Final Thoughts from Lydia
“Goals don’t have to be perfect. They just have to be yours. And they only work if you’re willing to start.”
Here’s to progress, not pressure. And to stepping into 2025 with purpose, kindness, and the support you need.
If you're not sure where to begin, we’re here to help you take the first step.
